Summary

Seen on court in early 2019 on the feet of ATP star Novak Djokovic, the Asics Court FF 2 was one of the year's most highly anticipated tennis shoe releases. Now the wait is over. Asics builds on the success of the original Court FF by keeping some of the most popular elements, like the Mono-Sock construction and ultra-responsive FlyteFoam cushioning. The Asics team then redesigned the upper with a more supportive blend of mesh and TPU materials. The updated outsole was inspired by motorcycle tires, and it offers a more rounded feel for better control when sliding. The Court FF 2s are the first shoes to get our global review treatment, and playtesters from Tennis Warehouse, Tennis Warehouse Europe and Tennis Only tried them on a variety of court surfaces to provide an extensive assessment. It is safe to say that our team was more than impressed with every aspect of these shoes, from the comfort to the support to the weight. The global TW playtesters were hard pressed to find a negative. Overall, the Asics Court FF 2s feature the best of all worlds and should be on any player's list of must-try shoes.

Comfort - Score: 4.3

FlyteFoam cushioning in the Asics Court FF 2 offers light, supportive comfort. Although this update is more rigid than the previous version, Sean still felt the comfort was on point. The US-based playtester said, "The bootie construction and FlyteFoam made the fit contoured and the underfoot cushioning very soft without sacrificing the performance. They did feel slightly long to me, so I went down to the lower end of my sizing spectrum, which made the fit snug in a good way."

"The Court FF 2s didn't require any break-in for me," added Tennis Warehouse’s Chris. "I wore several pairs during this extended playtest and took one pair straight from the box into point play with no issues. The shoes just got more and more comfortable after each consecutive wear. The uppers flexed well, and I could also feel the chassis of the shoes flexing and working well with my feet. The FlyteFoam cushioning provided a nice blend of comfort and responsiveness. On hotter days I appreciated how well the uppers breathed."

Tennis Warehouse Europe playtester Zeljko liked the soft feel and cushioning that the Court FF 2s provided after he made a size adjustment. He explained, "They fit tight around the heel and midfoot, while in the forefoot they have a medium-width fit. I have narrow feet, so the shoes are a bit too wide for me. I have always worn a US size 9 with Asics shoes, and this is the first time I had to go down a half size and wear an 8.5."

Safwane, another Tennis Warehouse Europe playtester, found a great fit. He said, "The shoes actually fit me really well. If you like some room in your shoes, you can definitely go for the same size as you usually wear. However, for a tighter fit, I would recommend ordering half a size smaller."

Tennis Only playtester Marco enjoyed the Court FF 2s from his first hit out on the courts in Australia. He said, “These shoes provided a great amount of comfort right from the first wear. There is a sock-like feel when you put your feet in the shoes, which makes for a snug and secure ride around the court."

Justin, Tennis Only's newest playtester, found comfort after the shoes had time to break in. He said, "The overall comfort of these Court FF 2s was great. However, I did find that there was a short break-in period, which made the shoe less comfortable to begin with. After the short break-in period the uppers had stretched laterally, and the shoes were a pleasure to play in. The FlyteFoam midsole was fantastic for long sessions out on the court, and it gave me lasting comfort and great response."

Foot Support/Stability - Score: 4.7

The combination of a newly designed upper and the Mono-Sock construction gave the Asics Court FF 2s maximal support and stability on the court. As an aggressive mover, Justin was looking for top-notch support and stability, and the Court FF 2s delivered. He commented, "The PGuard technology was great for stopping laterally when sliding. This helped to contain my feet when chasing down lobs and wide shots. The new Twistruss midfoot piece added more flexibility to these shoes compared to the last model. This resulted in better direction changes, which gave great support and stability."

The Court FF 2s provided the support and stability Marco needed on the court as well. He said, "I noticed ample support with these shoes, and the added stability and structure allowed me to move with more confidence around the court. The lacing system really made me feel secure, and I never felt restricted in any way."

"The stability was right in between my usual shoes of choice, the Gel Resolution 7 and the previous Court FF," added Sean. "I found the level of stability to be perfect without feeling overly stiff, and the shoes retained enough flex and rebound to keep my movement connected to the court. Superb marks here."

Chris found the level of support and stability to be a highlight of this test. He said, "I was able to move with absolute confidence that the shoes would flex where needed while still offering enough support to keep my feet and ankles safe."

Across the pond, Tennis Warehouse Europe playtester Safwane found a stable ride in the Court FF 2s. Safwane described, “As soon as I stepped into these shoes they securely wrapped around my feet, giving me a glove-like fit with no extra movements. For me, this is one of the most important things I look for when selecting tennis shoes. I need shoes that feel comfortable while also providing me the security to be confident with every movement on the court."

Overall Sole Durability - Score: 4.4

Even our playtesters who are tough on their shoes found the Asics Court FF 2s to hold up well during this extensive playtest. Sean, who played on hard courts, said, "I found I could get about a month out of these shoes, which puts them just below the Gel Resolution 7s and the 2018 adidas Barricades. I am pretty tough on my outsoles, so this didn't really come as a surprise to me, but I was hoping for a durability guarantee to be added to this update, even though the last version didn't have it. Still, I could see most players getting a lot of life out of these shoes."

Chris, who also tested his shoes on hard courts, thought the Court FF 2s offered a great balance of speed and toughness. He said, "Both the toes and outsoles of these shoes held up well. I wouldn't put them far off Gel Resolution levels of durability. I am impressed, as my Court FF 2s feel just as fast as my Solution Speed FFs, yet they’re more durable and supportive."

Marco can be pretty hard on both the outsole and upper of his shoes. The Court FF 2s passed the durability test for him. He explained, "Along with the added stability, I noticed a high level of durability with these shoes. The PGuard feature prevents anyone from burning a hole through the medial side of the shoe, which is an area I tend to wear through."

Justin had no complaints whatsoever in this category. He said, "During my time playtesting these shoes, I found no issues with durability. The PGuard technology on the uppers seemed to be made of a tough PU material that showed little wear."

Over in Europe, Zeljko and Safwane weren’t able to test the durability due to playing on soft, unabrasive court surfaces.

Traction - Score: 4.4

Asics updated the tread pattern on the Court FF 2s, and the new grip offered our playtesters a more forgiving response. Zeljko wore the Court FF 2s out on the red clay in Germany. He said, "I tested the Court FF 2s with the clay-court outsole, and they had great traction. I was able to move pretty aggressively, and I liked it a lot."

"The Asics Court FF 2 definitely belongs in the sliding category," continued Safwane. "I played in the all-court version, and I was really impressed by how it performed on the hard court. I was able to slide with ease to get an extra shot back into the court during a point. For me, it's not a surprise that these shoes were designed for Novak Djokovic, because they feel like they were made for his aggressive lateral movements and sliding."

Justin found his ideal level of traction in these shoes. He said, "I never had any slips when playing in the Court FF 2s. These shoes were great for quick, hard stops, which really complemented me as a fast-moving player."

Chris agreed, adding, "The level of traction was perfect in the Court FF 2s. I was able to slide out of an aggressive stop with lots of control. I also liked how the edges of the outsoles allowed me to pivot and transition smoothly into my next shot. When I was looking to push off and take a quick first step, the shoes hooked up with the court surface to get me moving quickly."

Sean found the Court FF 2’s outsole to be on the slicker side. He commented, "If you like to slide, this is going to be your kind of shoe. The outsole is notably slicker around the perimeter of the shoe, which is great for sliding, as well as easy pivoting. It takes some getting used to, but I really appreciated the blend of traction in my pair."

Marco also found the level of grip to be a positive. He said, "Traction wasn't an issue in the Court FF 2s. Although I'm not a 'slider' on the hard courts, these shoes held up to my expectations without any concerns."

Weight - Score: 4.3

Weighing just shy of 2 ounces more than the previous version (size 10.5), the Asics Court FF 2s proved to be just the right weight for our playtesters. Justin compared the Court FF 2s to the last version, saying, "With the addition of the Twistruss technology, these shoes felt lighter than the previous model. This allowed me to move around the court quickly and nimbly without any issues."

Sean was impressed with the way Asics distributed the weight throughout the shoes. He said, "Even though these shoes feel on the medium end of the weight spectrum, I never had to worry about them once they were on my feet. Whatever extra mass was allocated to making the shoes more stable and durable was put to good use, and I wouldn't want them any other way."

Chris found the weight of the Court FF 2s to be perfect. He explained, "It felt like there was just enough of everything engineered into the shoes to offer the highest level of performance. The blend of support with the light and fast feel has made them my favorite shoes to play in."

The weight of these shoes did not slow Zeljko down on the court. He said, "The Asics Court FF 2s do not feel heavy to me. They helped me move quickly around the court."

Safwane felt the Court FF 2s landed right in the middle of the weight scale. He described, "The weight is exactly what I expect from a tennis shoe: neither too light nor too heavy."

Marco wrapped up the playtest the same way it started, on a high note. He concluded, "The weight of these shoes is noticeably more than, say, a Solution Speed, but they come with a bit more durability. I didn't find the weight to be a drawback in any way while playtesting."

Overall - Score: 4.6

Likes

Sean - "I like just about everything here. The Asics Court FF 2s are probably the best shoes I've worn to date."

Chris - "I love the support, traction, fast feel, comfort, cosmetics and fit."

Zeljko - "The combination of the soft cushioning and the weight makes the Court FF 2s aggressive and fast. Also, I really like the traction on the clay court."

Safwane - "Great shoes! They are perfect for aggressive-moving players looking for secure and comfortable shoes."

Marco - "The durability and comfort of the Court FF 2s are tough to beat."

Justin - "I thoroughly enjoy the PGuard and the traction of the Court FF 2s. The PGuard adds extra durability on the inside of the shoes, which I love, as I am someone who tends to burn holes in my shoes there. The traction is perfect for me too."

Dislikes

Sean - "I wish the laces were thicker (luckily, that’s a very easy fix), and for the price I wish they came with a durability guarantee."

Chris - "The laces are too thin. They have a tendency to come undone, and they put pressure on top of my feet when tied tightly. An easy fix by swapping them for some thicker laces."

Zeljko - "It took me two hours to really feel comfortable, especially because of the material used on the upper in the forefoot."

Safwane - "The Court FF 2s were really putting pressure on my feet, especially on the upper part near my ankle. However, I only felt that for the first couple of hours, and it improved over time."

Marco - "These shoes felt slightly clunky at first, but I got used to the feel very quickly."

Justin - "I think these Court FF 2s struggle a bit with ventilation. My feet tend to get a bit hot in them after an hour or so, but this is the drawback to a more durable upper."

Comparing the shoe to others they've tried, our testers said:

Sean - "If you could triangulate all the best qualities of the Asics Gel Resolution 7, Solution Speed FF and the Gel Court FF, you'd find yourself with the Court FF 2. Did I mention I love these shoes?"

Chris - "I found a lot more support and durability from the Asics Court FF 2s than I did from the originals. I'd say these shoes combine the best of the Asics Gel Resolution 7s and the Solution Speed FFs. They are currently my favorite shoes to play in. I also enjoy playing in the Nike Air Zoom Zeros and New Balance Fresh Foam Lavs."

Zeljko - "Basically, the Asics Court FF 2s are something between an Asics Solution Speed and a Gel Resolution. A really good mix of stability, softness and agility."

Safwane - "I’m currently playing with the adidas SoleCourt Boost, and I felt more stable and secure in the Court FF 2s. Both shoes offer great durability, comfort and a good weight. The Court FF 2s are definitely my favorite when it comes to sliding. I just loved them!”

Marco - "They’re similar to the Asics Gel Resolution 7s, but the Court FF 2s bring a bit more to the court, including added comfort and durability."

Justin - "The Asics Court FF 2s are the among the best tennis shoes I have ever used; they were superb in almost every area. I would highly recommend them."
